On May 29, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmon, received the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, who arrived in Dushanbe to participate in the First High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation.
Following the meeting, Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana stated that she was very pleased to meet with the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmon.
“During the conversation, I expressed my sincere gratitude for the longstanding and fruitful cooperation between the Republic of Tajikistan and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Of particular importance this year is Tajikistan’s initiative and support in the adoption of the Resolution on the Link between Water Resources and Climate Change, which was unanimously endorsed by all member states. This resolution expands ESCAP’s mandate in water-related work, including glacier preservation, especially within the framework of regional cooperation across Asia and the Pacific,” said Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana.
According to her, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmon, expressed the Government’s readiness to host the Regional Preparatory Meeting of Asia-Pacific countries for the 2026 UN Water Conference. “We, in turn, are also fully prepared to support this initiative,” emphasized Ms. Alisjahbana, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP.
She also noted that a number of priority areas of cooperation between Tajikistan and ESCAP were discussed during the meeting. In particular, they addressed issues related to transport, trade—especially digital trade—sustainable and renewable energy, social protection, and financing for sustainable development.
“One of the key topics in the area of development financing in which we are working with Tajikistan is the issuance of green bonds. Given that Tajikistan is a landlocked developing country, considerable attention in the discussion was also given to transport infrastructure and communications. In conclusion, I would once again like to express my deep appreciation to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmon, and to the Government of the country for their high-level and constructive cooperation,” concluded Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana.
